You cannot just leave it out
In Portugal, leaving furniture on the pavement is fly-tipping (despejo ilegal) and municipalities can fine — typically €50–€400 for household items, more for larger loads. The van dropping it off is often traced back to the property owner.
The four legal routes
1. Câmara municipal collection (cheapest, slowest)
Every Algarve câmara offers recolha de monstros — bulky-item collection. In Loulé, Albufeira and Faro this is free but you must book (usually 1–3 weeks wait). Rules:
- Book online or by phone with your specific address
- Only place items outside the night before collection
- Furniture, mattresses, appliances typically all accepted
- Limits on volume (usually 3m³/collection)
Best for: one or two items, not in a rush, want zero cost.
2. Ecocentro drop-off (cheap, DIY)
Every Algarve municipality has an ecocentro — a licensed waste centre where residents can drop off larger items themselves. Free for small quantities, charged by tonnage above that. You need transport that fits the item. Fridges accepted; mattresses accepted.
Best for: single item you can transport yourself.
3. Private removal (fastest, priced)
A company like Whitehouse Services collects from any floor of your property, wraps for hygiene, and routes to licensed recycling. Single-item collection typically €40–€90 depending on item and access. Full room €150–€300. Whole villa see our cost guide.
Best for: heavy items you cannot move, upper floors, tight timeline, or multiple items at once.
4. Donation (free, feels good)
Usable furniture in good condition can be donated. Algarve options:
- Local bombeiros often accept usable donations
- Refood, Cáritas and church charities
- OLX and Facebook Marketplace for direct give-away
- Second-hand shops in Loulé, Faro and Portimão often collect free
Best for: sofas, dining tables, chairs, wardrobes in good condition.
Mattresses are the exception
Mattresses are the single hardest item to dispose of in the Algarve. Câmara collection accepts them but with a wait; ecocentros accept them but you need a van; and no charity takes second-hand mattresses (hygiene). Private removal is usually the fastest route.
Fridges, freezers and appliances
By EU WEEE law, refrigerant gas has to be recovered by a licensed handler. Never bin them, never leave at the roadside. Your options:
- The retailer of your new appliance is legally required to take the old one (mention when ordering)
- Câmara monstros collection accepts white goods
- Private removal — routed through licensed WEEE recycler
Quick comparison
- Sofa, no rush: câmara collection, free, 1–3 weeks
- Sofa, this week: private removal, ~€60–€90
- Sofa, still in good condition: donation to Refood or OLX, free
- Full house: private removal — nothing else scales
- Fridge: retailer take-back when replacing, otherwise câmara collection
