Ask any holiday rental host in Vilamoura, Almancil or Vale do Lobo which part of the property gets photographed most by guests. It is not the bedroom. It is not the kitchen. It is the pool area — the sun-drenched terrace, the loungers, the tile decking, the pool coping. That is also where the harshest reviews come from when something is wrong: slippery tiles, black algae in grout lines, faded wood, cracked cushions.

By April in the Algarve, most pool areas are showing months of accumulated damage — winter rain leaching minerals through stone, spring pollen coating cushions, algae blooming in shaded corners. Here is exactly how a professional pre-summer clean fixes it.

Why Winter Wrecks Pool Surrounds

The Algarve gets around 500mm of rain between November and March, most of it in short heavy bursts. That water sits on porous stone, leaches out efflorescence salts, and provides the perfect moist substrate for black algae to colonise. By the time you notice green streaks in April, the algae is already deep in the pores of the stone — pressure washing alone will not remove it.

Step 1: Chemical Pre-Treatment

We start with a biodegradable algaecide and bleach solution applied by low-pressure sprayer, left to dwell for 15–20 minutes. This kills the biological growth at root level before any water touches it.

Step 2: Controlled Pressure Wash

Different surfaces need different pressures. Travertine tolerates ~1500 PSI; sealed porcelain handles ~2000 PSI; unsealed limestone and terracotta need ~800 PSI with a wide-angle tip. Step 3: Grout & Joint Detail

Grout is where algae hides. A rotary surface cleaner combined with a stiff-brush pass on visible grout lines finishes the job.

Step 4: Anti-Slip Test

Before leaving, we do a wet-foot test on every walked surface. Anything still slippery gets a second detergent pass — critical for insurance if you rent the villa.

Step 5: Optional Sealing

A hydrophobic sealer applied after cleaning keeps stone dry, blocks algae for 12–24 months and dramatically reduces future maintenance. Worth doing every two years on Golden Triangle villas.
